Rule of Law Tour 2002

Media Advocacy Workshops
Dates and Locations: April 15 to 16, 2002 at the Public Defenders Office, and April 17 to 18, 2002 at the University of Alberto Huratado, Santiago, Chile

The media advocacy module consisted of a two two-day program, which combined lectures and practice aimed at improving the ability of participants to effectively use the media to advocate for legal reform and judicial innovation. Our first media advocacy session took place on Monday, April 15 and Tuesday, April 16, 2002 with some eighteen public defenders at the National Public Defenders office. The second media advocacy session took place on Thursday, April 18 and Friday, April 19, 2002 at the Universidad Alberto Hurtado. The participants in the second training session came from regional prosecutors offices (Ministerio Público) and the Ministry of Justice.

Working with ACCESO faculty (Lilia Velasquez, Carlos Gonzales and Andrew Muroff) and local journalists (Alvaro Salinas and others), participants learned how to work with editors and reporters, develop stories, and conduct interviews and press conferences with a view to bringing the media into the reform process. By providing such specialized education to legal professionals, more information can be provided to the public at large. As a consequence, there will be increased public support for the judicial reform that is now underway.

Learning from our instructors’ experiences and through a novel learning-by-doing methodology, ACCESO participants created public service announcements -with a view to educating the public about the importance of justice and the legal method by which to seek it. The workshop included an exploration of the professional responsibility of attorneys and judges when using the media. A rather robust dialogue ensued.
