ABOGACIA
UTILIZANDO LOS MEDIOS EN
TIJUANA, MEXICO |
On August 26, 2002, at the Centro Cultural
Tijuana (CECUT), Mexico, ACCESO Capacitación
trained 70 law enforcement officers, private lawyers, judges, and
law students from both sides of the border in Media
Advocacy. This interactive workshop called "La Prensa y
el Estado de Derecho", provided participants vital skills to
survive in our media frenzied world. We simulate press scrums, press
conferences, and talk show interviews. We write press releases and
perform public service announcements - all with video coverage,
instructor critique, and live editing. The themes to these exercises
are all related to the rule of law and justice issues. Our instructors
came from all over the Americas to lend their specialized support
and knowledge base. Carlos Gonzales
(of Peru), Lilia Velasquez
(of Mexico), Michael Mandig
(of the USA) and Andrew Muroff
(of Canada) each played their part in empowering our participants
to experience the media in such an interactive way. Our training
team also included Paul McNulty of Canada and Sebastian Vives (of
Chile).
The rule of law requires a constant push by all the members of
the legal sector. By understanding the intersection of the law
and the
media, we promote all our advocacy skills.Testimonial
from Christian Limon, a Mexican lawyer and participant in the Media
Advocacy Workshop
The workshop "The Press and
the Rule of Law" was a revealing experience, something unexpected
with a good methodology. Carlos Gonzales and Lilia Velasquez made
the most of the course, Carlos with his experience and funny teachings,
and Lilia with her deep knowledge on important themes of advocacy.
It was a quality presentation with a mixture of highly specialise
techniques to explain and show in a graphic way a personalise critique
with real examples. They also gave advice on how to improve the
relations with the media, and I think this is a crucial element
for all professionals, even if they are not lawyers, because they
use it in their every day life. Before going to the workshop, I
didn't consider the media as a tool in the development of my law
skills, but thanks to ACCESO I now have new alternatives to assure
the correct application of the law.
I would like these workshops to be offered more frequently to
lawyers and law students because these days people need to be
more aware
of the rule of law and the legal reforms that are taking place
in Mexico.
