ACCESO,
GTZ AND CEJIP ON THE
"UNA NUEVA JUSTICIA EN MARCHA" TRAIN |
On
December 15, 2002, ACCESO with its partners, GTZ, CEJIP, and the
ministries of justice of both Chile and Bolivia, commissioned a
train to travel from La Paz, Bolivia to Arica, Chile. Dubbed "Una
nueva justicia en marcha", this mobile international legal
clinic crossed the Altiplano and deserts of this very remote part
of the Hemisphere. The Americas were well represented by lawyers
and law students from Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Germany,
Mexico, and the United States.
For James Cooper, Director
of ACCESO, "the train project represents one of the good things
about globalization. With legal professionals and law students from
so many parts of the world, we came together to celebrate our collective
effort in strengthening the rule of law throughout the Americas."
The
idea for the "train of justice" came together in late
September 2002 in the Bar Liguria of Santiago when Jorg
Stippel (El Rebelde) and Yerko
Ilijic (el Ultimo) shared a few pisco sours with James
Cooper and dreamed of a mobile legal clinic for South America.
From the back of a napkin, came the plan and with Jorg and Yerkos
management, the dream became a reality. El Rebelde and El Ultimo
to the rescue!
A DVD, movie and soundtrack of the experience was produced by GTZ,
the Chilean Ministry of Justice and ACCESO in 2003. Edited by Sebastian
Vives and filmed by Jose Porte of Chile, the film was directed by
James Cooper.
