Acceso Salud launches Medical Pro Bono Services

Acceso Salud proudly launched its pilot medical pro bono services in South America this past month when Dr. Richard Weinstein performed over 50 surgical eye procedures in the Essequibo region of rural Guyana.

A renowned eye surgeon from Toronto, Canada, Dr. Weinstein provided cataract surgery for patients who would otherwise not have access to medical treatment.

With a colleague from Canada and a volunteer group consisting of optometrists, opticians and the support of Lions Club members from Canada and Guyana over 1000 adults and children were evaluated and treated for eye disease.

" The trip was a huge success and we provided the same modern technique of cataract surgery that would be performed in any developed country," says the young doctor as he described the experience.

Cataract is the leading cause of blindness worldwide with over 20 million people affected according to the World Health Organization. With appropriate surgical treatment the majority of those afflicted could have their sight restored.

Look for Dr. Weinstein to visit Tijuana, Mexico and Santiago de Chile in 2005-2006 as Acceso Salud goes on tour with the mission of providing state of the art medical and surgical eye care to the peoples of Latin America.
