ACCESO with its partners wins Inter-American Development Bank Contract

Working with a consortium in Costa Rica, including many former students of ACCESO Capacitacion programs, ACCESO has won a grant from the Inter-American Development Bank for the training of hundreds of judges in Costa Rica as the Central American country modernizes its judicial sector.

“This is just great,” said Michael Mandig, who along with Lilia Velasquez, has been leading ACCESO efforts in Costa Rica since 2001.  “We have worked with the U.S. Embassy, with the University of Costa Rica’s Law School and with various government ministries over the last few years to build the programs,” explained Velasquez, “Now we are ready to train all the Tico judges in the skills they will need to consolidate reform efforts and oral trials.”

Angel Valencia, Claudio Pavlic, Carmen Gloria Ormeño, Georgy Schubert and a number of other Chilean instructors will also be sharing their experiences in the successful legal reform efforts that they have enjoyed with their colleagues from Costa Rica.

The training project will occur in 2006.  “This is a very exciting development” said James Cooper, Director of ACCESO, “We have been funded by the UN Development Programme and the Organization of American States for our programs in Central America, but this next vote of confidence by the Inter-American Development Bank is a great indication of the value of our projects, people, and our growing track record.”
