KATHMANDU, Dec. 5: Youths could play a vital role in the enhancement of the peace process as experienced by other countries, said participants at a two-day participatory education seminar on The Culture and Context of Peace Building on Monday.
The seminar is being organised by Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (IPJ), University of San Diego, California, USA, with the assistance of the Centre for Women and Politics with the theme of promoting informed constituencies for democratic participation.
Dana Eyer, fellow with US Institute of Peace, said that concern should be focussed on the involvement of youths in the peace process in the changing environment. Sharing the context of different countries that were facing conflict, he said that youths were playing a pivotal role for the development of peace.
He said war was behind the growing divisions in the society'. Narrowing the differences between the parties in dispute was an effective way of addressing conflict, he said.
Pointing at the linkage between political change and social change, he stressed the need to ensure good governance in order to address the issue of conflict.
Lilia Velasquez, professor of law at California Western School of Law, said that everyone was involved in politics irrespective of their insight into the subject. She said that youths should act as the vehicle to ensure peace by seeking widespread participation.
Velasquez said that establishment of democracy is not a simple and easy process, it takes time and sometimes the process demands a lot of sacrifice. She also shared about the ongoing peace building process and the role being taken up by the youths in different countries.
