ACCESO Director’s Message – 2006

Dear Friends:

What a year!  2005 was filled with wonderful events for ACCESO as we expanded our product line and our programs throughout Latin America.

We leveraged our specialization in information technology, developing GPS units for the human rights monitors along the United States-Mexico border.  We organized and facilitated training sessions for Chilean lawyers and judges on the use of DNA in court proceedings.  We developed curricula to educate the general public about the dangers of Intellectual Property piracy and to teach law enforcement officials how to investigate and prosecute those profited from this illicit industry.  We continued to train lawyers and judges in skills necessary to consolidate the judicial reform processes around the Americas.

We had some wonderful victories, winning an Inter-American Development Bank contract with our partners in Costa Rica to train judicial reform specialists.  We won a grant from the Avery-Tsui Foundation in Southern California to continue our work.  We also received some great media attention in newspapers across the United States – from the Dallas Morning News to the Washington Post and from the San Antonio Express News to the San Diego Union Tribune.  Magazines like the National Jurist and International Jurist sang the praises of our programs for lawyers and law students.  Television stations in Mexico, the United States and Chile have featured our programs and initiatives.   All in all, 2005 was a year in which we truly helped promote legal reform and assisted in strengthening the rule of law in the Americas.

To all my colleagues on the ACCESO Team I extend my gratitude.  To our funders and supporters, I send my thanks.  To our students, and those people who participate in our programs in so many countries from Canada to Argentina and everywhere in between, I send my hopes that together we will make the Western Hemisphere more just and equitable.

Best regards,

Jamie Cooper
