El Pistolero and Globo Guy Talk at Universidad de los Andes

On Friday, April 8, 2004, James Cooper, Director of Proyecto ACCESO, and Michael Mandig, an ACCESO Trainer and long-time mediator, arbitrator and litigator, headed up to pre-Cordillera to speak to 150 students and faculty members at the Universidad de los Andes.

The seminar called "Alternative Dispute Resolution in the Free Trade Agreement" saw James talk about the Free Trade Agreement between Chile and the United States that went into force on January 1, 2004 while Michael provided insights into the decade old North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)which is between Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Provisions for arbitration and mediation as well as special panels for investment disputes have been created in these agreements. With the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas being negotiated and scheduled for completion in 2005, there is sure to be more and more interest in new Hemispheric problem-solving mechanisms.

ACCESO’s efforts in the area of mediation and arbitration have continued over the last five years, with Michael, Jamie, and ACCESO Trainer Phillip Robbins of Phoenix, Arizona, providing workshops in Tijuana, Mexico, San Diego, California and in Concepcion, La Serena and Temuco.

New workshops are planned in Chile in 2004.
