CROSS-CULTURAL
NEGOTIATION WORKSHOP
Globalization
affects us all - whether we are lawyers in the United States or
in Latin America or factory owners, workers, and trade unionists.
Globalization requires an understanding of other cultures, particularly
their rules and their negotiation styles. If we are to have a truly
integrated economy, there is a need for legal cultures to develop
common methodologies for problem-solving. We must appreciate and
respect the practices and social values of other groups with whom
we live and work. Cross cultural negotiation is a critical tool
for the creative problem solver.
Proyecto
ACCESO works with law students, judges, and lawyers in role-playing
simulations of cross-cultural negotiation. This methodology is coupled
with lectures and readings as well as discussion groups for longer
programs.
In
short, the workshop is quite engaging. Acting on stereotypical roles
assumed from a case study, teams of negotiators representing their
international clients work toward reaching agreement. As participants
confront counterparts with their own cultural distinctions and biases,
conflicts inevitably arise and are resolved.
