ACCESO' s Drug Court Initative continues Proyecto ACCESO, with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Fundacion Paz Ciudadana and the Catholic University of Chile Law School, co-sponsored a national conference on drug courts, a problem-solving mechanism. There is movement toward reforming this aspect of the judicial system. Working with local stakeholders and government agencies, we are developing new ways to solve the growing drug dependency problem across the Americas.

On March 29th, Judge Laurfa Safer Espinoza, a judicial innovator and judge in the Bronx Drug Court in New York City , detailed the strengths of the new problem solving mechanism sucess that is being considered for national adoption in Chile. Drug courts were started by former Attorney General Janet Reno in Dade County, Florida. Judges from Palm Beach, Florida, and Toronto Canada involved in the drug court movement in their respective countries also spoke.
The Chilean Government was represented by the Attorney General of Chile, Guillermo Piedrabuena, public defenders, and the Vice-Minister of the Interior. Over three hundred people squeezed into a beautiful aula magna at the Catholitc University in Santiago.
