The Fair Trade Academy Kicks Off on July 9, 2007 On July 9, 2007 the Consortium for Innovative Legal Education hosts the Fair Trade Academy in the San Diego-Tijuana border region. Formerly the NAFTA Summer Program www.cwsl.edu/nafta, this intensive educational experience is open to law students from around the Western Hemisphere.
Students visit migrant labor camps, go on police ride-alongs, inspect border factories (maquilas), and meet with judges and immigration activists from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. The three-week summer program, using academic materials produced by Proyecto ACCESO, examines the role that international trade, human rights, and cross-border legal culture play in our global economy.
Courses in labor law, environmental law and an introduction to international trade are being taught on campus at California Western School of Law and at sites throughout Southwestern California and Northern Baja California.
The U.S.-Mexico border area continues to be of much interest as issues like border protection, immigration reform, and commercial relations play out on a daily basis. For more information about the Fair Trade Academy, please visit the program website at www.cwsl.edu/fta |
