As health care emerges as a major human rights challenge for the twenty-first century, ACCESO Salud builds on the successes of the ACCESO programs.
In the past several years, we have launched eye surgery initiatives in Guyana and undertaken exploratory discussions in Chile with a view to providing better vision to the poor, marginalized and indigenous populations in South America.
Under the leadership of Dr. Richard Weinstein, a leading eye surgeon from Toronto, Canada, ACCESO Salud has started to make a difference for the many people around the region suffering from cataracts and other challenges to their sight. In 2005 and 2006 Dr. Weinstein created pro bono clinics outside Georgetown, Guyana, treating dozens of local people and performing life-transforming operations on those with immediate needs. ACCESO Salud has also been pioneering a number of workshops with law enforcement officials in South America to educate them about the dangers of counterfeit medicines. The World Health Organization estimates that over 30 billion dollars is spent annually on fake medicines, posing a major threat to public health and safety. With ACCESO Salud’s assistance, customs and police officials as well as public prosecutors are empowered with new skillsets to prosecute pirates for their crimes and to ensure that public is protected from such dangerous practices. | | Newsletter Registration | | ACCESO Initiatives | | | | | |
